It has some unusual ingredients which make it unique and very tasty. Our Book of the Month suggestion is for the novel The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins, a compelling historical English courtroom drama about a Jamaican domestic servant who stands wrongly accused of a double murder. Our International Music selection of the month is De Fez a Jerez by Seffarine.

Throughout the weekend, the Gator by the Bay Festival will continue.
Friday (today), at the La Jolla Community Center, the Center for World Music will present the Namad Ensemble who will perform classical Iranian Dastgah music and will feature Pejman Hadadi on percussion, Saeed Kamjoo on the kamânche, and Kourosh Taghavi on the setâr. The 1st Annual Dia de las Madres, a special Mother's Day Celebration, will take place at the California Center for the Arts. Mariachi sol de Mexico will perform at the Sycuan Live & Up Close Theatre. As part of the German Currents Kino film series, Sonne Und Beton (Sun & Concrete) will be shown at the Digital Gym. There will be additional screenings on Sunday and next Wednesday. The one-woman show Esto No Tiene Nombre will be performed at the City College Black Box Theater. Rock en Espanol will happen and Border X. And Metalachi will perform at the Holding Company.
Saturday and Sunday, the 36th Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow will take place and will honor the San Diego American Indian Health Center.
Saturday, the Chinese Historical Museum will present an online talk on the Maritime Silk Road. There will be a Ukrainian Dance Workshop at the Hall of Nations at the International Cottages. The Latine Entretejida Exhibition of textiles will open at the Visions Museum of Textile Art. The exhibition will run through to October 5th. There will be a South India Kuchipudi Traditional Indian Dance Performance for Children at the Mission Valley Library. At the International Cottages' Hall of Nations, there will be a Ukrainian Dance Workshop for kids. At the North University Community Library, Professor of Humanities Gwenyth Mapes will discuss Frida Kahlo and Her Art. At the Arts Center in National City, there will be a talk about Making Cross-Cultural Documentaries. At the Joan Kroc Theater, the All 'Bout The Blues Music Is The Beat of Life performance looks like it will be lots of fun.
Sunday, in addition to the aforementioned Balboa Park Pow Wow and the final day of the Gator by the Bay Festival, the Chitra’s Varnam – A Film Music Program at Lincoln High School will feature Padma Bhushan K.S. Chitra (Vocal), Sharreth (Music Director), Nishad, Anamika (Vocal) and Nine Bollywood Musicians will be singing film songs in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.
Tuesday, the DGC Video screening will be Claire Denis' critically acclaimed film Beau Travail.
Wednesday, courtesy of the San Diego World Affairs Council, Hassan Fazili's latest documentary, Midnight Traveler, will be screened at the Digital Gym. There will be a Q&A afterward with Fazili. At Warwick's, there will be a book signing with Linda Moore who will discuss her book Five Days in Bogotá. The Gipsy Kings will perform at the Magnolia in El Cajon. At the Southwestern College Performing Arts Center, there will be a Celebrando El Mariachi event.
Next Thursday, the Theatre School at North Coast Rep will begin performing the bittersweet and daring dark Irish comedy, The Cripple of Inishmaan. They will present 7 shows from next Thursday until next Sunday. Spreckels Park in Coronado a World Vyshyvanka Day Flash Mob will go down. The San Diego Archaeology Center will host a Zoom talk with Dr. Ken Feder on Archaeological Oddities, Frauds, and Mysteries. The Opera À la Carte will perform La Bohème from Thursday to Sunday at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center. The award-winning South Korean film Parasite will be shown at Rooftop Cinema at the Hyatt downtown.
Next weekend, Festa do Espirito Santo will take place in Point Loma
Next Friday and Saturday, Handel's Rodelinda will be performed at the First UU Church.
Next Friday, the 2-week-long San Diego Fringe Festival will begin. At the City Heights Performance Annex, 19 Asian American artists will be featured in Motions & Emotions: Asian Women Speak Out. At UCSD, there will be 3 films screened for the Screening Pachacuti: Contributions from Transandean Decolonial Visions event with a discussion afterward. Also at UCSD, there will be a Launch Party for the Otherwise Film Festival.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the 43rd Annual Fiesta del Sol at Fletcher Cove will feature the Wailers, Ozomatli, Mustache Harbor and many more groups.
Next Saturday, the 17th Annual San Diego Dragon Boat Festival will take place at Tecolote Shores Park. There will be an Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration at the Balboa Park International Cottages with a number of Houses presenting. There will also be an Asian Pacific Cultural Festival at Mira Mesa Community Park. Moana will be screened on the Hyatt rooftop. At the Chinese Historical Museum, there will be a reading of the play There Is Always Sunshine On The Stage. At the Mission Hills Library, the awesome ethnomusicologist Bernard Ellorin will present an exploration of the Music of Southeast Asia. There will be a Foodie Fest in El Cajon at part of the American on Main Street festivities. At the Photographer's Eye Gallery, there will be an opening reception for the new exhibit 45 Years on the U.S.-Mexico Border. The Outside The Lens Wonder Lab will open a Voice Out Arts Exhibit, a youth media arts exhibition featuring more than 100 works by young artists. At Montgomery High School, there will be a United Heritage Festival featuring Ballet Folklorico Azteca de Montgomery and other Mariachi groups.
Next Sunday, there will be a Vyshyvanka Day Celebration at the House of Ukraine in Balbo Park. At Worldbeat, there will be a Colombian Folk Dance Workshop. Sāmoan music band Faiva will perform at the Central Library. At the Turquoise, there will be a lecture on and live demonstrations of Cante Jondo (a Flamenco vocal style). Kurdish singers Aziz Veisi & Jine Atrushi will perform at Babylon Palace in El Cajon.
Local theatrical productions include The 39 Steps at New Village Arts in Carlsbad (ends Sunday), Stir at the Old Globe Theatre, and Sense of Decency at the North Coast Rep (ends Sunday).
